Nevada
Newsmakers announces expanded coverage
RENO (12-8-2006)
Nevada Newsmakers has expanded its broadcast coverage in
northern Nevada with a move Nov. 1 to Charter Cable Channel 14
in Reno, Sparks and Fallon.
The lively and sometimes
heated political talk show features guests at the highest levels
of state and local government, as well as journalists and activists,
business leaders, health specialists and behind-the-scenes powerbrokers
and policymakers, according to host Sam Shad.
It gave us an
expanded coverage area for our second showing, Shad, who
has hosted the half-hour show for 13 years.
Nevada Newsmakers airs in a first showing at 12:30 p.m.
Monday through Thursday on northern Nevada's KRNV-TV Channel 4,
with 4:30 p.m. broadcasts in southern Nevada on Cox Cable Channel
123.
With the move to Channel 14, "more people in northern Nevada
will have the opportunity to catch the show at different times
during the day, said Norm Pytel, area sales manager
for Charter Media.
Sam has no problems
asking people the tough questions. A lot of issues are discussed
affecting people in Nevada. It makes for a better community,
Pytel said.
The expanded broadcast area proves the growing popularity of the
show, according to Mary Lau, president and CEO of the Retail
Association of Nevada, who has been a frequent guest.
One of the reasons for the growing demand is word of mouth.
More and more people are listening to the program and it is becoming
more of a place to quote Did you see Nevada
Newsmakers?' and then theyll talk about the subject.
"As we saw with
the latest election, voters are making more and more of an effort
to become informed. They read candidates websites, for example.
With Nevada Newsmakers now going to the outlying areas,
it gives another source for political information for the voters
in those areas," Lau added.
In the rurals,
voter turnout is among the highest in the state, said Alfredo
Alonso, director of government affairs with Lewis and Roca.
Clearly there
was a void that Sams show is filling. Its growing popularity
is because its providing Nevadans with a new angle on politics
in the state," Alonzo said.
"Nevada Newsmakers gives viewers up-to-date information
about pressing public issues and decision making, said Scott
Craigie, president of Alrus Consulting.
Its a great forum for people who are following, no
matter how casually or intimately, the activities, politics and
policy making in state and local government, Craigie stated.
With everyone
whos interviewed, theres an intimate exchange. Its
on four days a week, so you get a chance to hear not just from
some of the top people in policy areas, but the staff, members
of legislative committees, people who sit on city and county councils
and commissions. And also from judges and regulators everyone
from members of the Gaming Control Board to state Supreme Court
justices. And theyre being asked serious questions. You
get a chance to hear from a much broader range of policy perspectives
than you get, for the most part, from a news program," Craigie
added.
Nevada Newsmakers repeats on Cox Cable Channel 123 in southern
Nevada at 11:35 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with 4:00 a.m. broadcasts
of the previous days show broadcast Tuesday through Friday.
Cox repeats the weeks four shows beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Saturday and 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
KVBC-TV
Channel 3 repeats the four shows beginning at 5:00 a.m. Saturday
and Sunday. Reno radio station KKKOH-AM Newstalk 780 airs each
previous weeks shows for two hours beginning 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
Viewers also can access editions of the Nevada Newsmakers,
archived back two weeks, on Charter Channel 999, using a Moxi
or a regular converter box from Charter, and clicking on the I
Want More section.
Nevada Newsmakers is available in streaming video
24 hours a day at nevadanewsmakers.com.
Downloadable archives date back to June 2005.
VIDEO iPOD VIEWING QUADRUPLES
Live editions of the half-hour show have been podcasting in audio
since December 2005, and in video since mid-January 2006. Audio
and video broadcasts also are available on PDA's such as the Pocket
PC and the Treo.
"A viewer giveaway of 60MB video iPods, begun in October,
has quadrupled the number of video iPod viewers of Nevada Newsmakers,"
Shad said.
"Nine
viewers through November have received the devices. The promotion
has prompted people who own video iPods to start watching the
show," Shad said.
In the promotion, Nevada Newsmakers gave away one iPod
a week for nine weeks to viewers and listeners tuning in to get
the word of the day, then entering the contest on the shows
website.
The promotion was so successful. We plan to run the contest
again in January and February, giving away the latest version
of iPods, Shad stated.
I am just thrilled that we have so many different ways of
being able to reach out to people with this program. The more
opportunities people have to learn about whats happening
in their state from the movers and shakers, the happier I am.
Viewers who subscribe to iTunes also can access each edition going
back to the first Podcasts in December 2005 by downloading files
free of charge from the iTunes store. Viewers can scroll through
the menu and choose shows by their airing date.
Nevada Newsmakers is produced by Sam Shad Productions.
Shad is a longtime presence on Nevada TV and radio airwaves, with
a career spanning almost 30 years.
He has
hosted Nevada Newsmakers since 1993. The show began airing
in southern Nevada in 2004
